Brentwood's Vivican and Adelphi upset #1 NYIT to advance to ECC Finals

Bridgeport, CT - The fourth seeded Adelphi men's basketball team out scored #1 NYIT, 10-3, over the final four minutes of overtime to squeak out a 65-69 victory and secure a second straight trip to the East Coast Conference (ECC) tournament finals. With the win the Panthers improve to 17-12 overall, while NYIT falls to 20-8.

The Panthers started fast, taking a 14-5 lead at the 16:13 mark thanks in part to six points from Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Adelphi extended their lead to 10, 21-11, with 11:29 on the clock on a Sky Khaleel (Queens, N.Y.) jumper and took their largest advantage of the game, 25-14, just minutes later.

From there the Panthers went cold, scoring just one point over the next five minutes, while the Bears put up 16 points to take a 27-26 advantage with 3:45 to play. Adelphi moved back in front, 28-27, just 20 seconds later when Thomas Paul (Plainview, N.Y.) made two free throws and would enter the locker room with a one point lead, 35-34.

The game became a defensive struggle in the second half as Adelphi and NYIT scored a combined 39 points and made 24 percent and 32 percent of their field goals respectively.

The Panthers crept out to a five point lead, 41-36, with 16:24 before NYIT crawled back into the game and stole the lead, 45-44 on a Daniel Cox three-pointer. The Bears took their largest lead of the half, 49-45, on a Phillip Jones jumper with 7:12 left on the clock.

Two minutes later Adelphi moved back out front, taking a one point lead, 50-49, on two points from Mike Mosby (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and would find themselves with a three-point edge, 54-51, with 1:09 left in regulation. With 51 ticks on the clock, converted a three-pointer to knot the score at 54 and send the game into overtime.

In the extra period NYIT's Miguel Pierre Fanfan gave the Bears an early two-point lead, 56-54 before the Panthers responded with four straight points from Mosby to claim a 57-56 lead with 3:48 on the clock. Both teams would go dry for the next three minutes when a Blaize three-pointer gave the Panthers the lead for good, 60-56.

Fanfan led the Bears with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Bryant Lassiter and Jones chipped in 14 points apiece.

Blaize led all scorers with 23 points, while Mosby turned in a 17 points, 12 rebound performance. Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) also had a strong game, pulling down 11 rebounds, including four straight offensive rebounds in the last two minutes to keep the Panthers alive.

Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, March 4 when they play the winner of the C.W. Post, Bridgeport match-up in the ECC finals at 2:30 pm in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
